Words
Sometimes a single character can have different meanings; by putting it with another character, it forms a new word and gives a defined meaning.
character + character = word
For example:
The character 天 (tiān) means “sky; day; heaven”.
The character 气 (qì) means “air; smell; gas; to make angry”.
When these two characters are put together, they become 天气 (tiānqì) which means “weather”. The meaning is unique.
